BRCA inherited gene

10-Apr-2009 00:31

I recently was told of a book that was written by a cousin about living in the Shadow of Cancer. It is the story of a family that I knew must of had the Cancer gene or something. Too many young people around 50 have died and they all had the same grgr grandpa, but they lived in different countries that were thousands of miles apart. This was a tremendous relief to know that the mystery was caused by a inhereted gene--same surname but they all lived so far apart....I guess that some blood testing will be done and hopefully done--they can conquer this.

Re: BRCA inherited gene

Please read about a promising new drug Olaparib which has been tested in a Phase I Clinical Trial for killing BRCA1/2 gene induced cancer cells in SCEARCH Spetember 2009 issue a magazine published by the Institute of Cancer Research UK . Their website is www.icr.ac.uk. Said to have been tried out on patients with ovarian, breast and prostate cancers. Based on this early promise Phase II trial is said to be planned.

My query is if it will also work with pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately ICR does not entertain mail from the public.

Re: BRCA inherited gene
If it is BRCA1/2 mutant cancer then its likely that olaparib/PARP inhibitor would be effective as it targets all cells with this mutation

Re: BRCA inherited gene

I would be interested to read about this drug. My mum carried the mutated BRCA1 gene, she died in November last year from Ovarian cancer aged 58, I think she got the gene from her mum who died of breast cancer at the age of 59. Myself, my sister and my brother have an apppointment tomorrow to be tested for the altered gene, I hope we dont carry it but not that hopeful.

Re: BRCA inherited gene
Thank you!! Haven't actually been tested yet, today was a talk, got to go back again she suggested I take my fiance with me next time to talk again and have the test and then I've got to go back again for results and no doubt more talking. I hope I'm not carrying the mutated gene, and that I inherited the normal one (understand now each person carries two of the gene which is number 17 and that we inherit one from each parent). Dont want the altered gene!
