Re: cervical cancer appointment

How did your appoitment go?

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year ( age 38 ) - if you need any help/advice let me know.

2009 was really scary for me and my family - but I am back on track now.

Cheers

Re: cervical cancer appointment
I had routine smear test - which came back abnormal ( normally takes about 6 weeks, got result in 3 weeks )

I had to go for a Loop Biopsy - which was uncomfortable ( but at the end of trhe day - if it can maybe save your life - its worth doing !! I then had to wait 4 weeks for results ( got letter for appointment 3 wks = when I saw consultant and gave me the news we didnt want)

I have found the communication between GP and several depts within hospital to be pretty poor. The dept who sent you the appoint prob think someone else told you, you would be needed earlier for other tests

don't be scared - they don't like to say until they are sure. The fact you are being investigated further means you already have a better chance of catching it early, if indeed it is cancer. Due to research and fantastic consultants, once I was diagnosed - I thought , ' well its in their hands now ' - they know what they are doing and I owe them my life.

Once diagnosed I had further tests and scans and it was another 4 weeks before my operation ( radical hysterectomy ). At this stage I was also told it didnt matter if they did op the next day or the next month it would not grow that much. they wouldnt want to leave me for 6 months though.

But in those early days - it just felt like a waiting game.

Just been for another check up today - all is well - I will get checkups every 3 months for 2 years now.

Let me know if I can help anymore. Its been good to talk about it !!

Cheers

Re: cervical cancer appointment
More and more people live after cancer nowadays.

Ironically I have always done alot of fundraising ( my grandma and aunty had breast cancer - but are fine after radiotherapy)

1 in 3 people will have cancer ( thats pretty high - but so is the survival rate ) 1 in 9 women will get breast cancer - now I am part of the stats

Its easy for me to say now - dont fret about it - you and the docs will sortout what ever is the best for you.

Also another bit of really helpful info - if you are allocated a Macmillan Nurse or similar - this does not mean you have the worst news- they work with survivors too So if you see the uniform or badge it ok - they are there to help and are very knowledgable.

Take Care
