Re: Colon Cancer

I was lucky on how fast they screened my colon for cancer. It all started when I had to rush myself to hospital due to excrutiating pain in my abdomen, and it took the nurses over a day to settle me in a ward as they pumped me up with morphine. I don't remember much after that, but day or so later I was operated on, and when I woke up frm the op, the surgeon told me they had to remove a portion of my bowel, and he asked would I like to have a look at the stoma they left me with. I did not know what a stoma was, and I could not bare to look down at my stomach for days. My bowel was sent to a lab for tests and I found out two weeks after the op, the blockage was due to a tumour. The surgeon was the one that sat down with me to tell me about the tumour, and discussed the next options, such as chemo. I guess, if they cannot operate on you and see directly inside what the problem is, it will take longer for them to screen your colon. They had to cut me open to find out there was a blockage that was causing the severe pain. But after that, they were the ones that chased me to arrange to see the oncologist and to start the chemotherapy treatment, and even phoned me to remind me that i was due to see the surgeon again for a check up. it depends on the local authority, but I have had no problems with being in contact with my hospital and the staff there.

All the staff seemed quite surprised at the fact that I was only 38 years old and young to have colon cancer, and all treated me with kidsgloves and I felt I was being wrapped up in cotton wool and all the staff were wonderful all through the year, from the surgery, to having the Hickman Line put in and during the chemo, and later seeing my surgeon. I seriously could not have done it without the wonderful staff at both the Leeds Hospitals that was involved with my case. They would get together to discuss each patient as a team, from the surgeon, to the oncologist and the nursing staff.
