Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

29-Mar-2009 18:48

I have been diagnosed with T2 Kidney Cancer ie. the tumor is enclosed within the kidney and doesn't seem to have spread. The tumor is however quite large - about 6 inches long and about 3 inches in diameter. The signs are that it hasn't spread but it can't be determined until my operation to remove the whole kidney - the operation is on the 21st April. Since my diagnosis in early March I have been having periodic pains in my lower abdomen - especially lying in bed at night.

I have also been having back and leg pain for about a year now - an x-ray last November was diagnosed with arthiritis of the spine.

Does anyone have similar experiences ? Do you think the stomach / back pains may be caused by cancer spread ? What is the operation like for kidney removal ?

Re: Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

Hello Steve

I do not have kidney cancer but I know of at least three people on this site who are in your position. One of them has had their kidney removed (some time ago now) and they have posted within the last day or two. They are well but have to have regular check ups. Hopefully they will come to your thread and be able to answer some of your questions. It seems to me that if the cancer has not spread beyond the kidney then its removal should sort out the problem. You can function perfectly well with one kidney. A little later, if you get no reply, I'll try and find this thread (it was very recent) and alert the person to your concerns.

Hi again Steve

Just found the thread I was talking about. It is under Symptoms etc. and the author is Lishe "Kidney Cancer Sufferer". Hopefully they can help.

Re: Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

Hi Steve

I have had kidney cancer also. I also suffered with lower back and flank pain, this is how I resulted in finding the cancer, as the pain got so severe I went to A & E who then admitted me and the following day went for a CT scan, followed by a CT scan with dye the day after that. I had my op about 3 or 4 weeks after diagnosis. My kidney cancer was at stage III, as it had spread to the local lymph nodes. although they took those out when they removed the kidney.

I have recovered extremely well, no problems with just one kidney. Since the op I have been having scans for a year and a half and they have been clear. Also my friends brother had kidney cancer, confined to the kidney. That was 3 years ago now and he is fit and well with his last scan clear.

When I had my op, I went in on the Sunday evening and came out on the Thursday evening. I had keyhole surgery which went extremely well. I was sore when I came round but they give you pain killers for that. My biggest scar is only about 3 inch in length and I have 2 other scars which are only about an inch in length. The staff were wonderful, always putting me at ease and talking me through everything. Two weeks after surgery I had a follow up appointment where they confirmed that the tumour had been cancerous and that they had got all the known cancer out. They told me I would have to have regular CT scans and check ups for 3-5 years to keep an eye on me.

I was very worried the first few follow up scans, wondering whether or not iif t had returned, but as time goes by I get more and more positive. As I said in my previous message to LarryQ, I have put so much weight on recently my clothes are popping. Hey but who cares at least I am well now.

Well enough about me. If you need to chat or got any concerns regarding the op or the cancer, please don't hesitate to contact me. I would love to help or be there just to listen. I would also love to hear how you get on. I know its hard, try and not worry. Stay positive, as long as you've got family and friends who care and love you, you will get through this. Take care and keep that chin up.

Lishe x

Re: Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

Hi SteveG

I went to the docs in november with pain in my stomach, back etc, and they thought it was kidney stones. After a couple of CT scans, the diagnosis i recieved was the same as yours - even down to the size of the tumour.

At the point of diagnosis, nobady can prepare you for how you feel. They did believe that the cancer may have spread to my bones for which I needed additional scans but luckily all was ok there.

The 2 weeks between diagnosis and operation, I got pains and aches everywhere, which I put down to the cancer. I just think it is your mind playing horrible games with you. And I have to say, talking with other people who have had cancer, the first year afterwards, you believe that every ache and pain may be the dreaded bug coming back - try not to panic.

I was advised that they would do keyhole surgery, but they did prepare me that 10% of keyholes fail and they have to conduct radical surgery. If it is keyhole, then the recovery period is relatively quick and painfree. Unfortunitely for me, the keyhole surgery failed, and I had to be cut open. The result is that I have 3 keyhole scars, one scar about 3 inches long, and the large one about 14 inches long.

Let me prepare you incase you have radical surgery. If like me - you will be taken to HDU to recover and I was there for 2 days. They will get you out of bed the next day although you will not want to do this. You will then move to a surgical ward where you have a lot of nurses caring for a small amount of patients. They constantly monitor your BP, urine output etc etc.

I left hospital after 8 days. You feel like you have been kicked around for weeks afterwards, and if you have the radical surgery, you will not feel right for 3 - 6 months. I was also signed off work for 2 months. You will not be able to lift anything heavy for 3 months.

I want to give you the nasty side because nobody fully prepared me for it.

The positives are - it is fairly pain free as you will be given lots of pain relief. The cancer will be gone. Your friends and family will treat you like a star and pamper / spoil you rotten.

SteveG - this is not an easy thing to deal with but you will get through it and it is actually quite common, and in no time at all you will be back to normality. Good luck with the operation, I will be thinking of you - but for now, try not to worry or think that it has spread - I really dont think it would have done.

Re: Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

Hi Steve, yeah the pre op I actually found quite stressfull as it means that you are coming ever closer to what is after all major surgery. I assume that they have told you that you will need an anti co-agulant jab before the operation and every day thereafter until you leave hospital. This normally goes in the stomach, however, I made the mistake and asked for it in my shoulder the first time which hurt like hell. In the stomach is actually relatively pain free way of doing it.

I was advised of the risk of chest infections, and recently spend a day in hospital with just that - they initially thought it may be a blood clot. Now over that and looking forward to my next follow up consultation and scan at the end of april.

Regarding the spleen - I have a great old family friend that had this removed about 10 years ago, and he is doing fantastically well. He had some ups and downs after the op however, he leads a perfectly normal life and has retired to France where he states that the sun and red wine is better than any tablet that can be prescribed.

If I dont get the chance to chat before - good luck with the op - I know all will be well, and make sure you rest well afterwards. Having had the radical approach, I know that you wont be able to doing anything but for the first couple of weeks.

Re: Diagnosed with Kidney Cancer

Hi Steve

Glad you are so positive about all this. I don't think the spleen thing is of any great moment. Better to have it removed and get shot of any extraneous nasties.

Sounds as though things should go well although probably feel rough for a few weeks afterwards! Small price to pay. You can malinger in the garden if the weather is half decent! I've just come off the phone to a friend who is having a pig heart valve replacement job in a week. He fully intends to malinger and watch his wife slaving away!!

Cheers and let us know how you get on. Judith
