Hi everyone, im so confused just now, we were told 5 days ago that my dad has terminal lung cancer which has spread, there was no indication he had this until he was taken into hospital complaining of breathlessness, where he was found to have pnemonia, after a few days he wasnt getting any better, they done a scan found out he had lung cancer and then few days later said it was terminal and had spread into his lymph notes. the hosp desided to do 5 days radio therapy, the first few days my dad appeared to deteriorate very fast they said it was wrapped round his wind pipe hence his breathing is poor, thats why they wonted to do the radio to try reduce it to make him more comfortable, over the past few days he appears to have picked up and maybe i was wrong to but it gave me a bit hope but today have been told his oxegen levels are low again. i know the doctors cant give a length of time we have with him, and i know you may read this and think this is about me but its not i just really dont understand, my dad even now still has humour and to look at him he looks okay to be honest you wouldnt think he was ill now appart from the oxegen mask, i dont know if anyone can answer to this and to be honest dont even know what im asking, ive stopped working as i want to be with him, i dont know what to do, we've been told hes not allowed to leave hospital until he can breath better, i dont want to lose him hes to young im to young im just blethering on now, id be greatfull for any thoughts thanks

Re: not got a clue whats what
Welcome to the forum, and don't worry about us thinking it's about you as we are all in the same place. I think it's hard to understand when someone is initially diagnosed with cancer, especially if they seem well enough. If you're anything like the rest of us, you'll find the next little while a bit confusing, but we're all here to try and make sense of this illness. Will your dad be allowed chemo and have they given you any idea of how long he has? Some people although their cancer isn't curable can live for a long time if the cancer is contained and they are allowed treatment. Everyone's different though, and you need to ask the doctors at the hospital about your dad's condition. I guess they would let him home if they didn't think he needed treatment in hospital, so at least you can be reassured that your dad is getting oxygen he needs. I know it's frightening and confusing, just keep putting your thoughts onto the forum and we're all here to support each other in any way we can x

Re: not got a clue whats what
I think when you first get the news of either having or someone close to you having cancer you go into shock. I myself had breast cancer 9 years ago and my dad had lung cancer 7 years ago. He sadly passed away 9 months later although it was heart failure which was the overriding factor. Everyone reacts differently to this news. Your dad sounds like he is trying to protect you all as much as he can as to how he is feeling etc. My sister went into denial when I was diagnosed and told me they had got the wrong notes!!!!!! Not very helpful at the time but I can laugh about it now. When my dad was diagnosed it broke me in two and I could not believe I was going to lose him. He was also diagnosed as terminal. Just be there for him and spend as much precious time with him that you can. You will look back and know you did everything you could for him and he will treasure you being there for him.
